Using Flippity in the Classroom
Date:27th March 2022/Sunday
Welcome to my new blog post exploring Flippity. This blog post will share features ,
examples of Flippity and how this tool can be used by teachers in the classroom to
create interesting, interactive, meaningful learning experiences. Let's begin by exploring
what Flippity is. Flippity is an online tool , a series of web apps that can be used to create
interactive learning activities. Flippity turns data on a google Sheet into an online quiz show,
flash cards, memory games, word searches etc. This is a free tool, you do not need to create a login , just click on the demo to explore the activity and then click on the
instruction word to follow instructions to edit the template and create their
own activity.
Why Flippity? It is easy to use the tool. It is easy to integrate the tool with G SUITE of
education. There are already built in templates that teachers and even students can use to
create creative learning experiences. There is no technical difficulty in using the Flippity tool
online. The available templates can be used to create online games like scavenger hunt,
flash cards, bingo games, word search, crossword puzzle, word clouds, self assessments,
formative assessments, leader boards, randomizers can easily be generated by entering
data in Google Sheets. The tools works with Google. It can be
easily accessed on any device.
You can create a copy of the template and save your edited copy in Drive. You would need to
go to the website Flippity and select the activity. For example let’s begin by exploring the
Flippity Randomizer. In order to see how it works click on the word "demo". You can click on
the arrows to spin the wheels. When you have explored the features go back and click on
instructions.
The instruction page will give you step by step details on how to make a copy of the template
and create your own interactive activity. The Flippity Randomizer can be used as a creative
writing tool for writing stories in English & in Urdu. These give words , situations as prompts
which students can use to create unique and interesting stories. These activities provide
ample opportunity for students to work collaboratively online. The link can be shared in the
Google Classroom or Google Chat groups.
There are 4 columns labelled as "Who", "What", "When" and "Where".
There were different prompts given to students and they spin the four wheels to generate a
bank of words that were then used to write stories in Urdu.
It was amazing to see students using similar words but coming up with different unique stories.
Every pair could use creative thinking skills to come up with very creative ideas.
They read their stories once they had all written them. The same task could be used for
English.
Similarly flash cards could be used in the early years.
Teachers could create interactive
flash cards for pre school students to teach
numbers, letters and shapes.
These could be colorful flash cards. Instead of using pre made flash cards, students could
use new flash cards made by their teachers. Since the pre school books have been
reviewed based on the Single National Curriculum, there can be very interesting
activities designed using the Flippity tool online. Explore link below
Another interesting way is to use the Flippity tool to create an assessment. These canfor multiple subjects at all levels. Teachers could use the tool to create formative assessments,
and these could be very challenging and different as compared to traditional paper pencil
based assessments. The same tool could be used for gathering feedback from students at
the end of the lesson. The demo example shared on the Flippity site is about checking
understanding of the Lord of the Rings character assessment. Through questions students
check their own understanding of the various characters in the novel. Details in the link below:
Flippity Lord of the Rings Assessment
Another interesting use of the Flippity tool could be gauging the progress of your studentsand how they work on the assigned project. You will need to enter data in a Google
spreadsheet with 5 columns labelled as "Start", "Progress", "End", "Unit" and "Color".
Once the required data is entered, the google sheet needs to be published to the
web (File - Share - Publish to Web). This link can then be embedded in Google sites or
any other sites. But this gives a very clear picture of the work students do in class.
And teachers can easily suggest a way forward for all students based on sound evidence
and data gathered.
Regards and prayers
